Derek Lawson spent eight years in the United States Marine Corps. Two combat deployments. Countless field exercises. Thousands of hours relying on gear that either worked or didn't — with no room for failure.
When he transitioned out of the military in 2019, Lawson didn't have a business plan. He had a problem he wanted to solve: the gap between military-grade reliability and the everyday products most people settle for.
The Standard That Shaped Everything
"In the Marines, you learn early that preparation isn't optional," Lawson says. "The gear you carry, the systems you build, the people you trust — everything has to earn its place. I wanted to build products that meet that standard."
Raider Supply Works started in Lawson's garage in 2020. The first product was a field-tested everyday carry bag — designed with the same attention to load-bearing, material durability, and organizational logic he had learned in the infantry.
I didn't start this company because I thought I'd be a CEO. I started it because I couldn't find civilian gear that met the standard I'd been trained to expect.
Discipline as a Business Model
What makes Raider Supply Works different isn't just the product. It's the operational philosophy behind it. Lawson runs his company the same way he ran his fire team: with accountability, clear communication, and an unwillingness to cut corners.
"Every product we ship gets the same inspection I'd give a weapon before a patrol," he says. "If it doesn't meet the standard, it doesn't go out."
Building After Service
Lawson is part of a growing generation of veteran entrepreneurs who are translating military training into civilian business ownership. For him, the transition wasn't seamless — but the discipline was transferable.
"The hardest part of starting a business after the military isn't the work. It's learning to operate without the structure. You have to build your own chain of command, your own accountability systems, your own mission briefs. But once you do that, you realize the Corps already taught you everything you need."
What Comes Next
Today, Raider Supply Works ships products across the country, with a growing loyal customer base of veterans, outdoor enthusiasts, and everyday consumers who value durability over disposability.
Lawson's advice to other veteran entrepreneurs: "Start before you're ready. Your training already prepared you. Trust the preparation."
